Cresting the curve

As most lottery winners can tell you, even what seems like good news can lead to low moments, and the bad stuff can seem like it will never end.

Significant changes in our life start us off on an emotional roller coaster that appears both unpredictable and out of our control. Fortunately, it isn’t either.

Research on what happens when we experience significant changes, from the birth of a child to losing our job, suggests that there are common patterns of emotional responses (known as change curves). Once we understand what these journeys are likely to be we can take pre-emptive action to deal with the low points and spend longer at the high ones. In effect, cresting the curves.

We can’t always decide what effect change will have on us, but we can at least fix the odds.

In 90 minutes you will have

Discovered how to find out where you are in the change curve (most of us are going through several different change curves at any one time).

Appreciated why you are at this stage and what you can do to ease the journey through the next stages.

Decided what practical things you can do at each point in the curves to increase time spent at the high points and reduce the depth of the curve.

Considered the barriers to cresting the curve and how to remove them.

Seen what you can do to spot where other people are at on the curve and what you can do to help them.
