Saying what you want

“Breaking up is hard to do”, sang Neil Sedaka. So are a host of other things.

All too often we know what we want to say but when it comes to the crunch, fear, embarrassment, doubt or a host of other emotions get in the way and it either comes out wrong or doesn’t come out at all.

Sometimes this happens because we are too concerned with how we come across; sometimes because we are frightened about how the other person or people will react; and sometimes we know what we feel but don’t know how to say it without looking stupid.

In all these cases we may choose to shut up. But we don’t need to. There are many techniques which help us speak out, be heard and have impact in a way that will enhance our reputation and help make sure that the right things are done first time.

In 90 minutes you will have

Tried structuring what you want to say in different ways to make it easier to transmit.

Spotted your own internal barriers and worked out what you can do to overcome them.

Experimented with imagining different scenarios ahead of time and so preparing yourself for what is likely to happen.

Realised the potential damage that not saying what you want is causing you and the people around you (and so the positive impact you would have if you were more assertive).

Practised saying what you want in potentially difficult scenarios and received feedback on what you did well and how you could improve further.

Prepared for the next time it will be difficult to say what you want.
