Sharing bad news

“You haven’t got a job”; “You’re not in the team”; “Your proposal has been rejected”; “I know I said I would but things have changed.”

Because sharing bad news is difficult we tend not to do it, leave it too late, or do it badly.

In most cases this can be avoided or reduced, and all the people involved (including you) can feel at least that the situation was well handled and, quite possibly, more positive towards each other than you did before.
And because bad news tends to challenge our self-perception, the way it is handled makes a strong impression that can affect people for years. So it’s worth getting right.
